The baseball team failed to qualify for Division-I (D-I) of the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) tournament this year and was placed in Division-II (D-II). The team got off to a quick start against St Andrew’s Episcopal School in its first-round matchup, scoring six runs in the first inning before winning 11-1.

Boys’ Basketball
2008-2009 Finish
: 6th place in Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Division II (D-II)
Briefly:
Senior Asad Meghani returns to lead the Hornets for a fourth straight year from the point guard position, and this winter, he could have more help than in any prior. Sophomore Tre Dean, 6’5", senior Ephraim Renfro, 6’4" and newcomer, senior Brennan Sawyer, 6’5", help make this the tallest Greenhill lineup in recent memory.
Players to watch:
Boys’ Swimming
Seniors Asad Meghani, Brennan Sawyer, David Zale, sophomore Tre Dean.
2008-2009 Finish
: 2nd place SPC
Briefly:
The boys’ varsity swim team finished 2nd in the 2008-2009 campaign at SPC only behind St. Mark’s School of Texas at the meet. Much of the same can be expected from the team again this year, as all four members from last year’s record-setting relay teams, seniors Jack Beckwitt and Will Acton, junior Hunter Hayden, and sophomore Cole Sadler, are returning.
Swimmers to watch:
Boys’ Soccer
Senior Jack Beckwitt, junior Hunter Hayden.
2008-2009 Finish:
7th place in SPC Division-I
Briefly:
The boys’ soccer team enters the 2009-2010 season with a lot on the line: The team has not lost a home game in more than five years in addition to making the SPC D-I tournament for 34 straight seasons. Not to mention the man responsible for all of that, Dick Hall, Varsity Boys’ Soccer Head Coach has announced that this will be his final season at Greenhill. Senior goaltender Michael Sheinfeld leads a Hornet squad that hopes to avenge a disappointing finish from last season and send its legendary coach out on a high note.
Players to watch:
Girls’ Basketball
Seniors Michael Sheinfeld, Pete Rodrigue, John Solowiej, sophomores Brad Dillenbeck and Max McKamy.
2008-2009 Finish:
SPC Division-II champions
Briefly:
With Carina Parikh ’09 and her 17 points per game from a year ago gone, the girls’ varsity basketball team faces the challenge of finding a new source of offensive firepower. Much of that void will likely be filled by seniors Dani Goodman, who averaged a double-double last season, and Grace Wielebinski, the team’s leader in assists, returning with a cast of young Hornets that includes sophomores Victoria Livingston and Hannah Orth.
Players to watch:
Girls’ Swimming
Seniors Grace Wielebinski, Dani Goodman.
2008-2009 Finish:
2nd place SPC
Briefly:
After trailing only rival The Hockaday School in points at last year’s SPC championships, the girls’ varsity swim team has much of the same talent back in the pool again this year. Sophomore Claire Brandt, who now holds the majority of the school’s swim records, leads a squad that also includes junior Chelsey Sveinsson and sophomore Amanda Beare.
Swimmers to watch:
Girls’ Soccer
Sophomore Claire Brandt.
2008-2009 Finish:
SPC Division-I champions
Briefly:
Last year’s defending SPC champions return this year as heavy favorites to win the conference. Junior goaltender Holly Reilly will have to step up and fill the void left by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) D-I commit from a year ago, Logan Reed ’09, who is now playing at Kansas University. But anytime a team loses one D-I commit and replaces her with three more, seniors Erin Mullen (Boston University), Avery Rape (Duke University), and Jordan McCray (Rice University), odds are it will be just fine.
Players to Watch:
Seniors Jordan McCray, Erin Mullen, Avery Rape, junior Holly Reilly. |

The Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) postponed its spring championships from Apr. 30 and May 1 to May 9 in response to health and legal concerns associated with the spread of the H1N1 virus throughout the U.S. and Texas.
The spring championships were postponed by the SPC’s Executive Committee in response to the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) decision to delay all public school athletic events until May 11. The UIL’s decision was made at the recommendations of David Lakay, Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner, and Robert Scott, Texas Education Agency Commissioner.
In response to the UIL’s cancellation of events, the SPC Executive Committee held an immediate conference call between the SPC Spring Championship host schools and a handful of other member schools. The SPC decided to postpone the spring championships because of the potential legal and medical ramifications for the conference and its member schools of continuing the SPC spring championships against the UIL’s recommendations and actions.
"When the UIL announcement came out, we did not have time to consult every SPC school," said Earl Dorber, Director of Athletics and Physical Educations. "They consulted legal and medical counsel, and determined that the best course of action would be to postpone the SPC Championships. They had to reschedule SPC because the medical and legal liability of continuing on as planned was too great."
The student bodies, faculties, and coaches of SPC’s 18 member institutions were notified via a posting on SPC’s official website, www.Spcsports.org
