A traditional high school basketball team consists of a small set of interchangeable starters and a bench filled with players who see minimal playing time.
This year, the girls’ basketball team has defied conventional logic because the seven bench players make this year’s team a feared Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Division-I title contender.
“We have twelve really amazing players, which means that we aren’t constantly relying on the same people to score every game,” said senior co-captain Dani Goodman, who leads the team in points per game with 15.5, good enough for 15th in the Metroplex among 3A and private schools. “Everyone contributes something. While the boys’ basketball team has started its season with a 5-2 (0-0) record as of Dec. 10, they are still upset by the narrow losses they suffered.
"We have lost to teams that we should have beat, but they were good teams and close games," said sophomore Eric Klein.
For instance, when the team played McKinney Boyd High School on Nov. 20, they lost by two points with a final score of 69-67. Opposite of the losses, the team’s wins have had scoring margins of greater than 15 points. The team defeated Carrollton Christian Academy on Nov. 24 by a 23-point difference.

freshmen, the girls’ basketball team has not been discouraged as it started the season off with a 68-54 win versus Home School and boasts a record of 7-2 (0-0) as of Dec. 10.
Having few upperclassmen on the team has left a hole, and senior leadership has become more important than ever. Darryn Sandler, Girls’ Varsity Basketball Head Coach, said he admires the senior leadership but also acknowledges they must pick it up this year.
"With so many sophomores and five new kids on varsity, the seniors’ leadership is more important than it has been in previous years," Coach Sandler said. "It is very important to let the younger players know what is expected on a daily basis."
